What Is CMIN2? AS58807 Network Features and Benefits

CMIN2 is a China Mobile International network identified as AS58807. For overseas hosting, it matters because China Mobile users need an effective international path of their own. A route that works well for China Telecom or China Unicom does not automatically give the same experience to someone on China Mobile broadband or mobile data.

The main appeal of CMIN2 is a separately identified international service option with a stronger quality positioning than ordinary CMI transit. To understand that benefit, first separate the domestic network, ordinary international connectivity and CMIN2 itself.

What is CMIN2?

The operator’s PeeringDB entry for AS58807 identifies China Mobile International – NII, also known as CMIN2. APNIC registers the ASN to China Mobile International Limited. This establishes the network’s identity; it does not mean every China Mobile international connection uses it.

Identifier Role to distinguish
AS9808 China Mobile’s domestic backbone context, registered to China Mobile Communications Group.
AS58453 China Mobile International’s ordinary international-network identity, commonly called CMI.
AS58807 The separately identified CMIN2 network.

The AS9808 and AS58453 records help distinguish these operators and routing domains. “China Mobile route” is therefore too broad a description to establish CMIN2. Ask which ASN and which service segment the provider means.

How the network fits into a connection

A China Mobile user first reaches the Internet through an access network. Domestic carriage moves traffic toward an international gateway. An international network then connects that traffic to an overseas operator and ultimately the hosting network. CMIN2 concerns the international-network part of this picture; the complete journey still includes other segments.

This matters because an overseas host does not control the customer’s entire path. It chooses upstream services and routing policies for its side of the connection, while other operators make their own forwarding decisions. Return traffic may use the intended CMIN2 path even when the incoming request arrives differently, or vice versa.

Do not interpret the number of visible traceroute hops as a reliable ranking of quality. Routers can hide internal forwarding details, and a long-distance hop can involve more physical distance than several short metropolitan hops.

What advantages does CMIN2 offer?

A network option specifically relevant to Mobile audiences

The most important benefit is audience fit. If a large share of users are on China Mobile, evaluating its international service option addresses their connectivity directly. Choosing only on the basis of a China Telecom-focused route can overlook that audience. This is especially relevant to mixed desktop and mobile applications, where the operator mix may change between home broadband and mobile data.

A differentiated carrier quality objective

A published CMI service-level document distinguishes CMI AS58453 and CMIN2 AS58807, specifying a lower monthly on-net packet-loss objective for CMIN2. It explicitly measures the carrier’s own network. That supports the quality distinction, but its contractual scope must not be converted into an end-to-end VPS promise.

The engineering value of reduced loss is straightforward: fewer packets need recovery, and interactive exchanges are less likely to stall. The customer-visible improvement depends on whether the international segment is actually the bottleneck.

International interconnection presence

The operator’s PeeringDB entry lists CMIN2 interconnections across multiple markets. That provides opportunities for participating networks to exchange traffic in relevant regions. It does not establish the exact city, submarine cable or upstream connection used by a particular VPS. Those details require service-specific evidence.

Which applications benefit most?

CMIN2 is worth investigating for customer portals, mobile-facing websites, remote administration and APIs whose China Mobile users report network stalls. A stable transport path can help repeated small transactions complete consistently. For download-heavy applications, evaluate sustained transfer as well: a good route with a restrictive outbound port may still fall short of the delivery requirement.

For a mostly US or European audience, a China-focused premium route may add little value. Choose based on where users connect, not on the assumption that a premium carrier name improves every destination.

CMIN2 is not CN2

The similar names are easy to confuse. CMIN2 belongs to China Mobile International and is associated with AS58807. CN2 belongs to China Telecom and is associated with AS4809. They are separate networks, not versions of the same product.

Likewise, a listing combining AS9929 and CMIN2 can describe multiple carrier-oriented options in one hosting family. It does not mean that a packet must pass through Unicom’s premium backbone and Mobile’s international network one after the other.

Limits to understand before deploying

No international network removes the user’s last-mile conditions, server overload or physical distance. A backbone-level quality objective also excludes much of the full application journey. Check the host’s own terms for route scope, port rate, monthly transfer and remedies rather than assuming the carrier’s wholesale contract applies to your VPS.

IP-family differences deserve attention. IPv4 and IPv6 can follow different routes. If your application publishes both address types, measure both instead of assuming a successful IPv4 test covers all visitors.

How to evaluate CMIN2 with TudCloud

TudCloud lists a Seattle AS9929 / CMIN2 VPS family. Its published test address is 193.218.200.198, and its Looking Glass provides another testing perspective.

Test from a representative China Mobile connection, repeat during busy hours, and review destination loss and application response times. If route direction is a deployment requirement, confirm it with TudCloud before purchase. The public listing provides a starting point for evaluation, not a universal latency guarantee.

Frequently asked questions

Is every CMI connection CMIN2?

No. AS58453 and AS58807 are distinct identities. A generic CMI label does not establish use of CMIN2.

Will CMIN2 fix slow Wi-Fi?

No. Problems on the local access connection remain separate from the international network.

Can Unicom or Telecom users reach a CMIN2-connected server?

Internet interconnection can make it reachable, but those users may take different paths. Test each important audience separately.
